An oral presentation has to be held at the end of the first term.
The aim of this course is to provide students with the tools and strategies necessary to enable them to follow lectures in their subject area and participate actively in courses, seminars and working groups of their study programme.
Students will receive training in all of the language skills (listening, speaking, reading and, to a lesser extent in English for Engineers, writing) required for effective participation in the Laser and Photonics master programme. In order to develop listening skills and strategies, authentic materials (podcasts, extracts from lectures, video clips etc.) will be used in class and also made available on the Blackboard e-learning platform as home assignments. Additionally, students will learn a variety of note-taking strategies for lectures. Authentic texts relevant to the field of Lasers and Photonics (extracts from textbooks, texts from scientific journals, popular science magazines etc.) will be used to develop students’ reading skills and improve their understanding and use of key terminology. Speaking skills will be improved by means of short presentations on students’ specific areas of interest and class discussions on issues raised by the reading and listening texts. Scientific writing skills will be introduced through short guided writing assignments. Students who successfully complete the course English for Engineers may attend the course Technical English in the Summer Term 2013.
This course requires prior knowledge of English, equivalent to at least level B1 CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) or the following bands/scores in standardised language certificates: IELTS 4.0, TOEFL IBT 70, TOEFL CBT 175, TOEFL PBT 505 or PET (Preliminary English Test).
